The History of Tacos
You may not realize when you bite into a delicious taco that you're eating history, but it’s true! Tacos are an ancient nosh that predates the Spanish conquest of Mexico. There is evidence of ancient Mexicans eating fish tacos, but the first historically recorded taco was enjoyed in the early 1500s.
The origin of the word “taco” is unknown. Some believe that it comes from the Nahuatl word “tlahco” which means “half” or “in the middle.” Others believe it comes from the miners that enjoyed this dish early on. They used wrappers filled with gunpowder as plugs, and they were known as “tacos.” The tool’s resemblance to the miners’ favorite dish may have inspired them to nickname the dish “tacos.”
